In the wake of the on-going, Frank Zappa reissue campaign, we at Zomby's have taken the initiative to contact artist Cal Schenkel, a man who's work has become closely tied with Frank Zappa's works. He has graciously agreed to take part in our Artist Q and A section in our first ever visual artist feature. Throughout Zappa's career, Calvin's art has appeared on many of the composer's album covers, appearing on some of the most iconic one's. His unique blend of styles and surrealist sense of humor so fit the music of Frank Zappa that his works include: We're Only In It For The Money, Lumpy Gravy, Cruising With Ruben & The Jets, Uncle Meat, Hot Rats, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, Chunga's Revenge, Fillmore East, June 1971, 200 Motels, Just Another Band From L.A., Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo, Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe ('), Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, Bongo Fury, Zoot Allures, Tinseltown Rebellion, Does Humor Belong In Music?, The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, Playground Psychotics, Ahead Of Their Time, Cheap Thrills, Mystery Disc, Son Of Cheep Thrills, Threesome No. 1 and 2 Slipcase art. In addition to this, he also designed the classic cover of Captain Beefheart's seminal "Trout Mask Replica" album, a design which is featured in the Zomby's banner. So, there you go! Ask away. Q and A will end in a week. And, of course, you can visit Cal here: www.ralf.com/

1. So, tell me a bit about yourself. Where are you from? 2. What are some of your influences? 3. Where did you attend school? 4. How did you become acquainted with Frank Zappa? 5. How was the infamous "We're Only in it for the Money" sleeve designed? 6. Tell me a bit about your 'sculpture' covers, "Uncle Meat" and "Burnt Weeny Sandwich".

You were immortalized in the Frank Zappa song, "For Calvin (and his next two Hitch Hikers)" - care to elaborate on the dense lyrics? Also, how does it feel to be part of FZ folklore?

Did you find it hard to come up with a theme to convey the music of Frank Zappa on each album?

One of the features of the music of Frank Zappa was 'Conceptual Continuity'. Was there a continuity to the album covers as well?
