There's a wonderful debate on another online forum about what people think of downloads. Here's my recent post:
I will NOT buy downloads. The day vinyl and CD are obsolete is the day that I stop listening to new music.
I like to own stuff, folks. I like material things. When people try to sell me music with invisible packaging, I guess I can hand them an invisible check. I smile up at my collection of physical medium every night as I go to sleep and in many cases, have interesting stories about every CD and vinyl in my collection
That, and CD's and vinyl sound infinitely better, anyway. I've been listening to nothing but CD's and vinyl lately, after years of listening solely to MP3 rips of my music and I must say, its like experiencing my collection all over again.

I don't think there's anything wrong with any medium of music. It's just a matter of preferance to me. I grew up in the era of CDs. Downloads came about after I was born, so I got used to CDs. If i can get something on CD, I get it on there. If not, I get it on either vinyl, cassette, or download (the last one I usually transfer to CD)., which ever is cheapest.

I like buying my stuff on CD to have the physical package. But I also like the convenience of an ipod so I burn everything to it. I also pay for downloads from Amazon since I can't always afford to spend $15-$20 on an album but my preference is buying a CD and burning it. Plus a lot of hard to find albums (which are usually pretty expensive) are on Amazon MP3. I've recently started to buy vinyl albums as well. I recently found a bunch of Yes, Tull, Renaissance, Weather Report, and ELP albums at a flea market for less than $1 each so I've been listening to them as well. I guess I'm "all of the above" - CDs. mp3s, and vinyl.

I hate relying on "clouds" as they are subject to the weather and shadowy issues of ownership rights that are also subject to change based on the profligate whims of the recording industry. If I buy a goddamn CD, I own the goddamn CD, and no one can suddenly delete it because I share the music, record the music, or transfer it to another medium. I replaced my entire album collection (now stored away in immensely heavy alphabetized boxes) with CDs, and will keep buying CDs because I have no faith in thin air.

I like having mp3s. I don't really enjoy streaming things online because I feel tied to my computer (or tablet) when I do that. I'd rather have a copy I can take with me somewhere, usually on my iPod, which has a docking station at my desk and in my car, 2 places I spend a lot of my time at.
Usually, though, if I know I really want something, I'll buy it on CD, sometimes even if I'd already bought the download (this happened with the new Hawkwind recently - I ended up really liking it more than I expected). I have a huge wall-sized cabinet full of CDs, and I'm proud of my "library". If I have something only in digital form, it doesn't feel like it "counts" towards the collection.
But for the convenience of checking new things out without taking up a lot of space (and space is a concern), mp3s are very welcome in my life.
I am very resistant to adopting the "cloud" mindset, though. That's going to take some time for me to warm up to.
